Explanation
* The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Facilities Strategic Plan outlines facility goals and priorities through 2035, including renovations, upfits, and construction of new facilities.
* The CMPD Facilities Strategic Plan prioritizes prominent, highly visible locations to contribute to the community's perception of safety and security and creates a clear CMPD brand that is easily recognizable, while also ensuring accessibility by being located on main thoroughfares that are served by public transit.
* The acquisition of this property helps advance the ultimate goal of expanding from 13 CMPD patrol divisions to 15 patrol divisions to support Charlotte's growth, especially in the northern and southern portions of the city.
* This property will be the future site of a new patrol division, the Northeast Division, which along with the anticipated completion of Northwest Division will allow the current North Division to be split into two jurisdictions.
* The addition of a new patrol division allows CMPD to assess future staffing needs and to reexamine division boundaries to better align staff capacity with call volumes as CMPD progresses toward full staffing of all police officer positions.
* The parcel is currently zoned light industrial and located in Council District 2.
