Explanation
* The Federal Highway Administration mandates that bridges and culverts be inspected every two years for structural adequacy, safety, and functionality.
* The city is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of 242 bridges within the city limits.
* This contract provides for maintenance and repair work on 37 bridges identified through a Council-approved bridge inspection contract.
* Work may include, but is not limited to:
* Superstructure repairs,
* Concrete pavement repairs,
* Asphalt surface sealing, repair, or replacement,
* Brush and tree control,
* Debris removal,
* Soil and erosion repairs,
* Barrier rail and handrail installation and repairs,
* Retaining wall repairs and replacement,
* Culvert repairs,
* Removal, containment, and disposal of the existing materials,
* Traffic control, and
* Erosion and sediment control.
? On March 31, 2026, the city issued an Invitation to Bid (ITB); no bids were received.
* NC General Statutes Section 143-132 prohibits municipalities from awarding construction contracts over $500,000 without receiving at least three competitive bids from the initial advertisement of the contract. The city may subsequently award the contract even if re-advertisement results in fewer than three competitive bids.
