Explanation
§ On January 12, 2026, City Council adopted a resolution to authorize the City Manager, or his designee, to apply for a grant in the amount of $249,169 from the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program (NCGHSP).
- This grant partially funds permanent Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) positions that comprise CMPD’s Driving While Impaired (DWI) Task Force for one year.
- The total cost of the task force was projected to be $989,675 for FY 2027, which would be funded by the $249,169 NCGHSP grant and $747,506 in a local match.
§ The actual grant amount awarded to the city is $230,169, and the new local match is $690,506 to be paid out of CMPD’s operating budget.
- The grant award will fund 25 percent of the costs for six sworn officer positions on the Task Force.
§ The terms of the grant require that City Council adopt an updated resolution authorizing the city to accept the grant funding.
